The Fairyland in India-Mussourie

Mussourie is a hill station in the Dehradun district of Indian state of Uttarakhand. Situated in the foothills of Garhwal Himalayan ranges, it is also fondly coronated as the Queen of Hills.  And indeed, Queen it is! With its regal aura, beautiful and scintillating weather and exquisite shawls of snow, Mussourie manages to leave you breathless.

Raised at an elevation of 1,880 meters, Mussourie has lush green and varied flora accompanied with its rich fauna. Daunting snow ranges of the north-east, shimmering views of the Doon Valley and Shiwalik ranges in the south, the town was once said to present a ‘fairyland’ atmosphere to tourists.

History-  The name Mussourie is often attributed as a derivation of ‘Mansoor’, a shrub which is indigenous to the area. The locals often call it is ‘Mansoori’.

The hill stations (including Mussourie), in pre-independence India was under a so-called propreitory of British. It was founded ‘by and for’ the British. Derogatory remarks like ‘Dogs and Indians are not allowed’ were very common and taxes were imposed if a trespasser was prosecuted.It is said the Moti Lal Nehru (an imminent lawyer and politician of his times and father of Jawahar Lal Nehru) would deliberately break these rules and pay taxes.The 14th Dalai Lama was at first established in Mussourie before being shifted to Dharmshala eventually.It is also called the “Gateway” to Yamunotri and Gangotri.

  • Nahata Estate- Previously known as “Childer’s Lodge” is a huge property of more than 300 acres, owned by the Harakh Chand Nahata family. Situated in the vicinity of Lal Tibba, it is the highest peak of Mussorie and offers an exhilarating and awe-inspiring view of snow clad mountains.

  •  Gun Hill- It is the second highest point in Mussorie, escalated to 2024 m. The height makes it a splendid place to be at. The picturesque view is beyond words.

  •  Kempty Falls- Situated on the hill tracks of Uttarakhand, 15 km from Mussorie o the Chakrata Road. It is another lovely point reaching for the sky and offering an enchanting ambience.

  •  Lake Mist- It is lovely picnic spot, lying on the Mussorie-Kempty road, at a distance of mere 5 km from Kempty falls. The flowing Kempty river has made many small waterfalls that are a treat for the eyes. Boating facilities ar also available here.

  •  Mussorie Lake- Recently built by the City Board & Mussorie Dehradun Development Authority, this picnic spot is on the Mussorie-Dehradun road. This picnic spot is an affable place to be at. There are pedaled boats available here. People enjoy picnic and boating at its best. It offers a spectacular view of nearby doon Valley and nearby villages.

    Falls in Mussorie-
  • Bhatta Fall- In the vicinity of Bhatta village, this place has a pond for waer amusement. It also makes a lovely place for picnic. The overall environment is very soothing with the fresh rippling water, surrounding hills and the lovely weather.Other  falls in Mussorie that are exquisite and showcases the immense beauty of nature are Jharipani Fall and Mossy Fall. The gurgling water along with the lush green panoramic view and snow-capped mountains are an enticing and mesmerizing experience.
  •  Nag Devta Temple- An ancient temple dedicated to the Snake God Lord Shiva, situated on Cart Mckenzie Road about 6 km from Mussorie on the way to Dehradun. This place offers a jaw dropping view of Mussourie and Doon Valley.

    Mussourie, is a land blessed with the bounties of nature.  Almost every place in Mussourie is inexplicably beautiful. Some othe places that are worth visiting in this hill station are Jwalaji Temple, Sir George Everest’s House and Van Chetna Kendra. The love birds find Mussourie to be an enthralling experience. Love, serenity and divinity fill the air and leaves you intoxicated.

How to reach Mussourie:-

By Air-The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, which lies approximately 54 kilometres away, and offers daily connectivity with New Delhi.

By Road-Being a popular tourist destination, Mussoorie is well-linked with a network of bus services, which includes private tour operators as well as state transport corporations. Also, the proximity to Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand makes Mussoorie all the more accessible.

By Train-There are numerous trains connecting New Delhi with Dehradun, such as the Shatabdi Express (as well as the Jan Shatabdi Express), the Mussoorie Express, and the Nizamuddin AC Special. The latter two trains are overnight trains. The journey lasts approximately 5.5 hours, depending on the train chosen. All the above mentioned trains pass through Haridwar.

Accommodation at Mussourie :- There are hundreds of hotels both budget and luxury class for all kinds of visitors. There are both Government and corporate guest houses available as well. Several lodges and dharmasala are available at a very affordable price. Food is very affordable for all kinds of visitors.
