Sri Golingeswara Swamy Temple and Monolithic Ganesh Temple, Biccavolu, Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh

About the TempleSri Golingeswara Swamy temple is situated at Biccavolu in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh. Lord Shiva is the main deity here. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple, the passages and the other halls or mandapams including the Mukha Mandapam - the main hall are exemplary in their construction. The main entrance is facing towards south which leads to the main shrine.

The walls of the Mukha Mandapam has ornamental & structural columns and screens. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi can be seen in Alingana Chandra Sekhara Mudra or embracing posture. An image of Lord Ganesha in a seated posture is also seen in this temple.

The idol of Lord Shiva is made of black granite. The walls of the sanctum sanctorum are ornated with Kostas which are surmounted by Makaratoranams that have sculptures, recesses, and projections with pilasters.

The temple tower or Vimana over the sanctum sanctorum has a row of pillars and beams that ends at its base. Above this, twelve beam, two steps, and a narrow Gala can be seen. Above the Gala is seen Nagara Shikharam with a gable on either side. A double lotus Kalasham or pot is placed on Shikharam. The entire architecture around the Sanctum is simply amazing.

Sri Golingeswara Swamy Temple was built during 9th and 10th centuries by Eastern Chalukyas. This temple is a good example of the Dravidian architectural style.Sri Golingeswara Swamy Temple is visited by childless couples, who offer special worship with several rituals. Those with ear-aches also turn up in huge numbers to worship and are said to be relieved of their nagging ear pain.

Monolithic Ganesh Temple

The Lord Ganesha idol stands 11ft tall, which is one of the biggest idols in the history of eastern Chalukyan sculpture, attracts thousands of devotees every day. Lord Ganesha is worshipped here as Sri Vijayaanand Ganapathi. The idol is carved out of a single stone. During the time of King GunagaVijaditya, an only single pair of arms of Ganesha existed and now the additional pair of arms is created. This idol is an amazing work of art, with Ganesha on one side and Lakshmi on the other. It is claimed that one’s wish is fulfilled if a request is whispered into the ear of Lord Ganesha.

The other deities in this temple are Goddess Raja Rajeswari and Shri Chandrasekhara.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Biccavolu which is 3 km away. Bus and auto services are available to reach the temple.

By Air: The nearest airport is Rajahmundry which is 39 km away.
