It is said that about 350 years ago, the idol of Lord Hanuman was found in the well and the temple was constructed at the same place. The temple was established by Sadguru Gopalanand Swami in the 19th century. According to a folklore, when Sadguru Gopalanand Swami enshrined the idol of Hanuman, he touched it with a rod and the idol came alive and moved.

Hanuman was born to Anjana who was an apsara, named ‘Punjikasthala’. She was born as a female Vanara on the earth due to a curse. It is said that the curse was supposed to get removed after giving a birth to an incarnation of Lord Shiva. Hence, Anjana performed penance to Lord Shiva to beget him as her child. Lord Shiva blessed her with the boon as he was pleased with her devotion.
