About the TempleSaas-Bahu temple or Sahastra Baahu temple is nestled in the small village of Nagada which is 22 km away on Udaipur- Nathdwara road. It is a twin Vaishnav Mandir which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. These twin temples are based on an elevated platform. The large temple or Vishnu temple is known as Saas temple which is surrounded by ten small temples and another small temple known as Bahu temple which is surrounded by five small temples.
Temple History and Temple ArchitectureThe temple history dates back to the 7th century. The large temple was constructed by Yashomati, wife of Commander of Mewar state. The primary entrance of the temples is made through a door which has carvings and a multi-lobed arch.
The 'Baahu' temple has an octagonal shaped ceiling, which is decorated with beautifully carved eight female figures. The 'Saas' temple has an archway in the front. The temple roof and pillars are full of carvings. Both the temples are facing towards the east direction. The temple is visited by pilgrims for its wonderful carvings.
Both the temples are constructed according to the concept of “Pancharatha” which includes Garbhagriha, Antryalaya, Ardhmandapm, Mandapam, and Varandha. The primary entrance of the temple is known as Kirtimukha. It is believed that the image of the Lord Vishnu was swayed from the Torana along with hymns in the praise of Lord on ceremonial functions.
The temple was originally known as Sahastra Baahu temples. Later, it was popularly referred to as Saas Baahu temple which is a local corruption of the original word Sahastra-Baahu, meaning "a thousand arms", a form of Vishnu.
The mandap of Saas Baahu temple has beautiful carved pillars and Toranas. The carvings of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Goddess Chamamunda, Goddess Kali, Goddess Mahishasur Mardini, Lord Krishna, Balram, Lord Parshuram, Lord Brahma and Lord Ram can be seen on the walls, roof plates, and pillars of the temple.Epics from Mahabharat, Ramayana and Lord Krishna’s life are depicted on the temple panels.
