About the TempleAhobilam Narasimha Temple is established at the upper Ahobilam which is located at a distance of 8 km from lower Ahobilam in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. The temple houses nine sub shrines of Lord Narasimha located within the radius of 5 km. Apart from this nine sub shrines, there is a temple for Prahaladavarada Varadhan at the bottom of the mountain. The presiding deity of this temple is ‘swayambu’ or self manifested and worshipped as Lord Ahobilam Narasimha Swamy or Ugra Narasimha Swamy since he appears here in his fierce aspect. The temple also houses shrines of Goddess Senjulakshmi and Goddess Lakshmi. Ahobilam temples represent a marvellous stone art and the whole testimonial of Ahobilam temple has been carved in stone form. The temple premise also houses the shrine of Adivan Sathagopulu.

The sculptures of Lord Rama, the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu, portraits of the Annam Acharya, the poet who praised Lord Narasimha Swamy with his songs, can also be seen on the walls of the temple.The Vimanam or temple tower above the Garbh gruha of Ahobilam Narasimha temple is known as Guhai Vimanam. The temple has Pushkarani tank which contains water from Bhargava, Indra, Narasimha, and Gaja Pushkrni rivers.

Legends

There are various hearsays about Ahobilam temple.

Once, Garuda wished to see Lord Narasimha in the form of the Avathara. To grant the wish of Garuda, the Lord settled in nine different forms on the Ahobilam hills amidst of dense forests. Since then, the hill is known by various names such as Garudadri, Garudachalam, and Garudasailam.

Ahobilam is considered as a sacred place where the Lord appeared from the stone pillar and killed demon Hiranyakasipu to rescue Prahalada.

Here, Mahalakshmi took birth in the Senju tribal hunters of the hills as Senjulakshmi, and married the Lord.

Sri Ahobila Muth is one of the most important Vaishnava religious institutions in India. It was founded by Sri Athivan Satakopan on the insistence of Lord Lakshmi Naraisimha of Ahobilam. The utsava moorthy of the Malola Narasimhatemple, one of the nine shrines of Ahobilam, is the main deity of Sri Ahobila Mutham.

According to the mythology Lord Vishnu appeared to devtas as half-man and half-lion which is one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu. The devtas shouted Ahobala, Ahobala and Ahobila on seeing Narasimha avatar of Lord Vishnu.  Ahobala, meaning great strength and Ahobila is the cave where sanctum is situated. Hence, this place is known as Ahobalam or Ahobilam.

It is also believed that the great sage Pothuluri Veerabrahmendra Swamy have meditated at this place. He also wrote Kalagnana, the knowledge of future.
