Ananda Bhairavi Temple, Sukharia, West Bengal

About the TempleAnanda Bhairavi temple is nestled in a quaint village of Sukharia located between Balagarh and Somra Bazar railway stations in Hooghly district. Sukharia has the eminence of being the destination for some of the finely built temples in West Bengal. The Anando Bhairavi Temple, the prime attraction of Sukharia, has been more or less well maintained.

The temple was built by Bireswar Mustafi in 1813. It is flanked on either side by 5 minor temples. Nine out of these 10 minor temple houses Siva Lingas and one has a Ganesh idol. The three leveled 25 pinnacled temple is considered as a unique structure in Bengal Temple Architecture. It contains 12 pinnacles at the corner of the first level, 8 pinnacle at the corner of the second level and the third level has 4 pinnacle at the corners. It is crowned with a central pinnacle.

The Ananda Bhairavi temple has a idol of Anandamoyee Kali, which is a presiding deity. She is flanked by two identical rows which contains six temples each. The temple has under gone some minor renovations and reconstruction and in the process it lost much of its beauty and grace.

LegendsAnanda Bhairavi temple is one of the five temples in West Bengal that records the remnants of extremely rare form of temple architecture. The approach to the Ananda Bhairavi temple, housing the image of Goddess Kali, is flanked by two parallel rows containing six temples each. Five of the temples on each row has eight-sloped roof. One temple on each flank has five-pinnacled roof. Bhairavi represents the grand power of speech, which has the nature of fire. Her rage is aimed towards the negative energies of the life. She is the supreme light and heat power. Bhairavi indicates the supreme word also known as Para Vak. She is subtler than and is the origin of Goddess Tara. Bhairavi is worshiped as Tapas by those who wish to seek knowledge. She provides command over the senses and the emotions. Her power of divine speech and spiritual fire eliminates all hindrances. She articulates herself in threefold form in the material universe Fire (Agni), Lightning (Vidyut) and the Sun (Lord Surya).

By Road: Sukharia is located at the 80km from Kolkata. Buses, cycle rickshaws are available to reach the temple.

By Train: Somra Bazar is the nearedt Railway station. The village of Sukharia is adjacent to Somra Bazar and can be reached on foot or cycle rickshaw.

By Air: Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is the nearby airport.
