About the Temple
Birla Mandir is located in the city of Kolkata, West Bengal. The temple is spread over 44 acres and it is devoted to Lord Krishna and Radha. Built by the famous Birla family, the temple is one the most beautiful, splendid and grand temples of India which are made out of sandstone and white marble. The main shrine of Birla Mandir has the idols of Lord Krishna and Radha. An idol of goddess Durga is installed on the left side of the Shikhar. A meditating idol of Lord Shiva is seen on the right side of the dome. The temple also houses idols of Lord Hanuman, Dasha Avatars, and Lord Ganesh.

Temple History and Temple Architecture
Designed by Nomi Bose, the construction work of this edifice took around 24 years to be completed, before it was opened to the public in 1996. The temple stands 160 ft tall. Birla Mandir has a spectacular cream- colored temple complex. It has corn-cob shaped towers. The total cost incurred to build this temple is approximately 180 million. Interior and exterior walls of the temple are engraved in different styles. The exterior part of the temple is constructed by using sandstone, whereas marbles have been used to adorn the interior part of the temple. The unique designs of the walls of the temple are a brilliant piece of work by sculptors from Agra, Mirzapur, and Muzaffarpur. Silver and Belgian glass decorated artifacts enhance the beauty of the temple. This temple also has some influence of intricate Rajasthani temple architecture. The stone engravings in the temple provide a pictorial display of blockedures from Bhagavad Gita. This temple somewhat resembles the famous Lingaraj Temple of Bhubaneswar. The electric diyas and wonderful chandeliers enhance its charm. The temple is a perfect example of beauty and devotion.
