About the temple

ISKCON temple at Mayapur is a pilgrimage spot which is situated in Nadia District of West Bengal. The ISKCON temple was founded by Acharya Srila Prabhupada. Later, it spread across India. The temple covers a huge area. At the main gate, an idol of Acharya Srila Prabhupada can be seen. This temple has 3 main altars, Sri Sri Radha Madhava, Panca-Tattva and Lord Narasimha Deva. The main deity of the temple is Sri Sri Radha Madhava who is accompanied by their Ashta-Akhis or eight friends as well as Gauranga Mahaprabhu and Giri-Govardhana. In the centre of the temple is the idol of Lord Nrisimhadeva who is known as "Sthanu-Nrisimha". This is the only temple where a particular form of Nrisimhadeva is worshipped. With bent knees and angry red eyes, he is ready to protect his devotees from demons. This idol was installed in 1986. Next to the main temple is Sri Sri Pancha-Tattva temple. In 2004, the magnificent deities of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Sri Nityananda Prabhu, Sri Advaita Acharya, Sri Gadhadhara Pandita and Sri Srivasa Thakura were installed.

International Society for Krishna Consciousness i.e. ISKCON society was founded in 1966 by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. The society focuses on Krishna worshiping. Presently, it owns 10,000 temple devotees and 250,000 congregational devotees worldwide. The ISKCON society has 350 centers all over the world. The international headquarter of the society are based at Mayapur near Kolkata. ISKCON society spreads its mission of the well being of the entire humanitarian society by preaching them Bhagavad Gita and other ancient blockedures.

Major Attractions

Srila Prabhupada's Pushpa Samadhi Mandir is a memorial shrine of Srila Prabhupada. A tall, magnificent, marble dome shines in the golden rays of the sun. The garland that offered to Prabhupada at the time of Samadhi has been laid down in the Pushpa Samadhi Mandir. A huge brass idol of Srila Prabhupada has been placed here. The garden near the Samadhi site is indeed beautiful. Inside the Samadhi building, a large panorama display shows Srila Prabhupada's life and his struggles to establish ISKCON and his mission. In the basement, there is an auditorium.

Srila Prabhupada's Bhajan Kutir is located on the immediate left side of the main gate where Srila Prabhupada stayed from 1972 to 1976. As per the direction of Srila Prabhupada, kirtan is performed with continuous chanting of holy mantra.

Gosala of ISKCON Mayapur houses more than 200 cows. These cows are taken good care of by volunteers and veterinary doctors. The Mayapur Gosala also sells products derived from the cow such as Ghee, Yogurt, and Go-ark.

Festivals and Celebrations

Temple celebrates festivals such as Ekadashi, Janmashtami, Holi, Radhashtami, Durga puja, Rath yatra, Jhulana Yatra, Diwali, Bengali New year and Gopashtami with great devotion.

How to Reach

By Train: The nearby rail-heads are at Howrah and Burdwan

By Air: The nearest airport to Mayapur is Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose (123 km).

By Road: Mayapur is well connected by road with other cities in the state. Buses and taxis are available from Howrah, Kolkata, and Burdwan to reach Mayapur.
