Rameswara Swamy Achanta Temple, Achanta, Andhra Pradesh

About the TempleRameswara Swamy Temple is located at Achanta in the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. It is a famous ancient temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The main deity is Rameswara Swamy. It is a Swayambhu Lingam or a self-formed Shiva lingam. The Lord is fondly called as Achanteswara Swami. There are around six Shiva lingams in this temple complex, Lakshmaneswara lingam, Markandeya lingam, Bhimalingam, Someswara lingam, Skanda lingam and Indra Lingam.

The temple is also famous for its marvelous architecture. Rameswara Swamy temple has a huge gopuram with five levels at the entrance. On the top of this gopuram, a sculpture of two lions standing on the head of the elephant can be seen. In between these two lions, five Kalashas are placed. A tall Dwaja-Stambham is seen in front of the Mukha Mandapam inside the temple.

History of the templeSeveral documents found on Rameswara Swamy Temple suggest that the temple was a very important religious hub for eastern Chalukya Empire between 700 AD – 1130 AD. An ancient religious belief that statue was found in an exhumation. Recently, during the year 2010 some ancient bricks and a Shiva lingam of Rameswara Swamy Temple was found out during the digging of an artificial lake near this temple. An oversized snake was also found around the lingam. 

Other Shrines in the TempleThere are shrines for the sub deities such as Lord Vigneshwara, Goddess Saraswathi and Saptamatrukalu in the temple premises.

Festivals and CelebrationsApart from regular Pujas, Abhishekams, and Festivals, Mahasivarathri is celebrated with great fervor. People gather here to pray, conduct Abhishekams and offer cow milk, Honey, Vibhuthi, Sandalwood powder and fruit juices to the God.

By Bus: Buses and taxis are available from all places in Andhra Pradesh to reach the temple.

By Train: Relangi is the nearest railway station, which is 28 km away from the temple.

By Flight: Rajahmundry is the nearest airport which is 67 km away from the temple.
