About the TempleChenna Kesava Swamy Temple located at Markapuram town of Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh is a famous temple of Lord Maha Vishnu. Sri Maha Vishnu is the prime deity in this temple who is also known as Chenna Kesava Swamy. The deity is accompanied by his consort Goddess Sri Mahalakshmi. Here, the Lord is known as Kesava as he killed Kesi, a demon.

Legends of the templeChenna Kesava Swamy temple was established between 1405 -1459 AD, under the rule of Vijayanagar. The temple has marvellous gopurams. The first level of the temple was built during the reign of King Krishnadeva Raya while the rest of the levels were constructed in 1837. The walls of Chenna Kesava Swamy Temple were built in 1425 AD These walls has 18 Inblockedions craved on it. These Inblockedions display the information about the tradition, culture and lifestyle of people during the king Krishnadeva Raya’s reign. The king donated around 355 acres of land to the nearby villages so that the people from these villages can take care of the temple.

Chenna Kesava Swamy temple has a huge Galigopuram which stands 135 ft tall. It can be seen from 5 km away. It is an imposing and amazingly magnificent sight.

The temple has a 40-pillared Mandapam with the mystic carving of the Lord Sri Krishna, Lord Anjaneya, Lord Vighneswara and Goddess Sri Maha Lakshmi along with their Vahanas.

The wonderful Kalyana Mandapam of the temple has 6 musical pillars that create 7 musical notes in its correct "Aaroha" and "Avaroha" when tapped gently with the fingers.

The unique feature of this temple is that every year during the morning of 16th December to 14th January, the sun rays enter the sanctum sanctorum through a window and touch the feet of the deity. This is a masterpiece of architectural wonder that shows the expertise of the artisans of Vijayanagar Dynasty. This makes the deity’s feet glow for 20 minutes. During this phenomenon, thousands of devotees visit the temple to catch a glimpse of this spectacular sight.

By Train: The nearest railway station is Markapur Railway Station, which is 5.4 km away.

By Flight: The nearest airport is Donakonda, which is 32 km away from the temple. Buses and taxis are available to reach the temple.
