About the Temple

Sri Veereswara swamy and Mother Bhadrakali temple is established in the Muramalla village, at a distance of 25 km from Amalapuram town in east godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. The ancient temple of Lord Veereswara Swamy and Goddess Bhadrakali stands on the bank of Godavari river. The Goddess shares the same dias as the God in the sanctum sanctorum.

The legend says that around hundred years ago, a local seignior wanted to rebuild the dilapidated temple at Muramalla. However, the Linga which he was carrying to a new place became heavy. Later, the lord himself suggested to him to have installed the Linga at the place where the present temple in Muramalla is located. The kalyana mantapa was constructed by Routu Peramma, a Dravidian queen who was rescued by the Lord when her boat was capsized in the Bay of Bengal.

It is believed that if an unmarried adult visits the temple just for once he or she will get a suitable proposal for marriage at the earliest.

LegendOnce, Lord Shiva was enraged when he came to know that Sati had immolated herself unable to bear the humiliation her father, Daksha had meted out to her during the Yagyna. Shiva’s anger knew no bounds. He performed the "Tandava" and plucked out a lock of his hair and threw it on the ground. A huge volcano erupted at that spot and Veerabhadra Swamy appeared from it. Lord Shiva’s anger personified. Shiva in Virabhadra avatar destroyed Daksha's yagna, cut off Daksha's head, but later replaced it with that of a male goat. But even after this, Veerabhadra Swamy could not be pacified. Immersed in grief, Shiva picked up the mortal remains of Sati, and performed the Tandava. Saints and other Gods prayed to Lord Vishnu to calm down Veerabhadra Swamy. Lord Vishnu in the disguise of Lord Narasimha went to pacify Veerabhadra Swamy. But he held Lord Narasimha Swamy and refused to let go. Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and other Gods prayed to Adi Parashakthi. She then sent Bhadrakali in the disguise of a young girl who approached Veerabhadra Swamy. Veerabhadra Swamy calmed down on seeing her. With the blessings of all the saints, Gods, and the Trinity, Sri Veerabhadra Swamy and Bhadrakali were married according to Gandharva Vivaham custom. Since then, the priests have been performing the Kalyanam or the celestial wedding everyday in the early hours as well as at night. Veerabhadra Swamy is deckout as a bridegroom which is followed by Pavalimpu Seva. It is believed that Veerabhadra Swamy gets angry if marriage ritual is not performed. The priests perform it in a traditional way wherein they take the deities around the village before kalyanam.
