Palakkad – the Arboreal Land

Palakkad, also previously known as Palakkattussery, is a large town and municipality in the state of Kerala in southern India. Palakkad acts as a beautiful arboreal gateway to Kerala due to the presence of the Palakkad gap in the Western Ghats.

Palakkad is also called the ‘Rice bowl of Kerala’ because of the rice cultivation in this place.

Places in Palakkad that will hypnotize you-

  • Palakkad fort- Dating back to 1766,this fort was built by Hyder Ali of Mysore. In 1784. It was captured by British. It is also called Tipu’s Fort (named after Tipu Sultan, son of Hyder Ali). Present day grounds of this fort houses a jail and a Hanuman temple.

  • Jainimedu Jain Temple- Situated on the western border of Palakkad town and is a historic Jain temple. The surrounding area is called Jainimedu. This temple has preserved the vestiges of Jainism in Kerala without much damage. The building has four divisions with images of Jain thirthankaras and Yakshinis in three of them.

  • Kalapathy-  One of the 21 Agraharams of Palakkad District on the banks of the Kalapathy river, famous for its annual Ratholsavam (temple car festival) and annual music festival.  It is the oldest settlement of Tamil Brahmins in Kerala. The uniqueness in its antique design speaks the story of the rich historic legacy.
  • Malampuzha Dam- situated about 8 km from Palakkad Town, Malapuzha Dam is the largest reservoir in Kerala. The surrounding area has an ethereal charm and picturesque beauty. The sprawling gardens are soothing and a thing to relish with your eyes.

  • Religious Places- The city houses many beautiful temples that add to the spiritual and cultural legacy of this place. Some of the temples that are highly revered and are celebrated by the city and its inhabitants are Emoor Bhagavathy Temple, Vedakkanthara Thirupurakkal Bhagavathy temple, Manappullikavu temple and Vishwanatha Swamy Temple.

Palakkad also has churches that are a treasure for the people. The C.S.I Church of Hope, C.S.I Robinson Church are the churches that are of high importance to people who are the believers of Christianity.
